31st Mar 2014 - old-school flowers display
Do you remember the days when flowers at the market florists were simply displayed in PVC pipes filled with water? I wonder who thought of this ingenious and simple way to display flowers? No fancy vases needed, just some industrial everyday materials!

29th Mar 2014 - Ark gallery, Jogjakarta
I enjoyed the visit to Ark Gallery very much, like all the artists' studios we visited this trip, the architecture of the gallery was unique with the gallery situated in the 'basement' of the building and in the midst of the residential area. Who would have guessed that the residential areas hid away so many gems? All these galleries are independent and set up by people who just wished to support their local community of artists. I loved feeling this lively 'rebellious' spirit in the art scene here, it seems to arise quite organically despite Jogjakarta not being as developed a city as Singapore! And of course the passion when the curator explained the exhibition... She is one of the two established lady curators in Indonesia!

28th Mar 2014 - trishaw ride!
The trishaws in Jogjakarta are very different from those I am used to in Singapore... In their case, the passengers are seated in front and the bikes are attached to the back, it was a cooling ride in the night to Alun Alun area as the rider explained in their language the various places we passed, and Widya translating for my benefit!

25th Mar 2014 - While Winter Whispers by Lullatone
lullatone never fails to make my day, with their non-interruptive instrumentals playing while I work on the computer, I love it! Even the little humorous song names, and Scandinavian inspired album art, they have a distinct pajama-pop style. This was their last album celebrating the winter season... I wonder if they would come up with a springtime on to complete the cycle?

24th Mar 2014 - whales fabric designing
one of the few more 'refined' drawings in this sketch-blog since this is one i have been working on today for a fabric design to enter the Spoonflower weekly contest. i had so much fun spending time on this! I always love the traditional patterns on Japanese fabric so i had to incorporate the Seikaiha into this, I always imagine what it would be like to have a full fabric collection based on these traditional patterns used in contemporary ways.

Visiting the temple for Qing Ming festival made me think about the traditional rituals we do as a sign of respect to our ancestors, we offer joss sticks and burn joss paper which represents sending of wealth to relatives who has passed on.

22nd Mar 2014 - internet research
We learned in new media class before that the internet is like a rhizome, one link leads to another, some links come dead, some pages lead to many others, it is more than a web of pages, it is a rhizome. Sometimes I like to just google search my way through images and stumbling onto unexpected inspiration many times.

19th Jan 2014 - Paprika the movie
After rewatching this at an older age, I finally understood the nuances behind the movie. Still, the scene that captured me years before is still my favorite - the one of the parade of disconnected items. In fact now maybe more so, I loved the scene after having visited Japan a few times since first watching the movie. I can recognize familiar cultural icons. What's not to like about a dancing fridge?

18th Mar 2014 - Papermoon Puppet Theatre
I enjoyed myself so much today celebrating My cousin's birthday by spending the day out. Along the way we stumbled onto some really cute artworks that upon further investigation, I realized, it is made in the artist studio I am scheduled to visit during the craft trip in a weeks time. What a coincidence! I am glad I got to see their works beforehand and I am so excited now!
