31st Jan 2014 - CNY Traditions

There are some traditions that are only unique to each family. For us, the longevity noodles with 2 hard-boiled eggs and red dates drink is a must for the reunion lunch to celebrate a new year! I like that some things never change.

(On another note, I just got through a full month in this project!)

30th Jan 2014 - Going to the Post Office

Snail mail may be out of fashion but for me there is nothing more exciting than sending out something to an overseas buyer or friend! Today I rushed down to mail something before the long public holiday break. Serving me at the counter was the friendly mister who is always so efficient with handling postal orders. Today though there wasn't a queue and he paused to chat about my knitted octopus and Momshoo business. :)

We woke up real early to set off for a former cemetery at Bidadari, climbed a tree, swung from a branch, mimicked paintings from famous artists and had a great time being silly with friends! I miss the crazy times we had as art students but I guess some things will never change...

22nd Jan 2014 - SunnyHills Cafe

SunnyHills... I am not even sure if you can consider this place a cafe since you do not actually order food, they just serve to you a pineapple cake and cold tea if 'you have time for tea'. No payment asked! We always wonder what is their business model to be giving away free food to anyone who steps in. I love the ambience of the shop.

19th Jan 2014 - The Great Fabric Exchange

It is one of the first times I ever tried to organize anything for my craft friends. This fabric swap was born from a casual discussion with fellow crafters during a craft market when we realized that all of us has stacks of fabrics we wish to de-stash all while getting new fabrics to play with and inspire us! In the end it expanded beyond a session just to exchange fabrics to one that was a great networking session for like-minded people!

15th Jan 2014 - a feast of good food!

We went out for a feast spread over 2 days to celebrate my turning 24! Best decision was to split it up so we have enough tummy capacity to enjoy and savor the good food. :) as we ate, we talked about opening a juice bar, decorated to look like a pub setting, perfect for the non-alcoholic-drinking us! The day before, my father and I successfully installed a ikea step ladder stool which we felt would be perfect for a guitar-strumming musician in... our juice pub! Oh, we can dream~

Pam came down from Bangkok for MAAD so I rushed down to present her with a few of our handmade items and I even wrote out a little booklet of things to do in Singapore for her stay here! Then, it was a long-overdued birthday celebration for Claire at a Thai restaurant with Ailin, I presented her a furoshiki-wrapped gift and we chatted about a possible Korea trip just the 3 of us.

2nd Jan 2014 - Dress-making

I am not sure if I can put Dress-making under something I 'like' for sure yet since today is the very first time I had a go at it. But I had so much fun sewing; from being all excited to see how the final outcome will look to having all these ideas of how a single pattern can be modified in many ways. I am thinking collars, sleeves, bindings, pockets, appliques, slits, oh! the possibilities seem quite endless! (and it all started with the buying of a fabric on a whim.)

365 "Likes" Project: 1st Jan 2014

I have been putting off a daily 365 project for too long so finally I told myself I will start one in the new year... so tah-dah! day 1. I will be doing a sketch/painting/art piece a day of one thing I like.

When I was younger in primary/secondary school, we used to get each other to write in autograph books, one section will be "Likes" or "favourites" or something to that effect. It is funny that while autograph books fell out of trend, as I went on to Junior College and then University, social media like Facebook started coming on and once again we are doing the same thing of "Liking" but this time in the digital world! So following that trend, I will make it a ritual to document one thing I "Like" every day in this year. (I haven't been doing much sketching so I wanted to work it into the project to start again)

1st Jan 2014 - Fish Soup

I had been worrying about doing my first sketch, i wanted it to be something 'woah!', an interesting item to draw... yet after I went through a whole day of shopping, the thing I chose to draw is the banal local dish of "Fish Soup". There are so many famous local fare but they are all very sinful, the one dish I could eat over and over again is this simple Fish Soup dish. somehow, when I don't know what to eat, I seem to gravitate towards this. Being easily available, and since I resolved to eat less meat 1 year back, fish soup is a familiar comfort-food.
